An Open Letter to the Democratic Senators in Congress

The people of the United States want universal health care. If you believe that universal health care is a basic human right. You must stand for a public option. One’s right to health care should not be subject to obscene profits conspired by corporate entities. We want health care not health insurance.

A recent pew poll asked if the federal government is responsible to make sure all Americans have health care coverage, or are that not the responsibility of the federal government. The results were responsible 62% - not responsible 38%. The poll found that 55% of Americans favor completely rebuilding the health care system & 65 % of voters believe that every American should have access to quality Universal Health Care.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, proclaimed that “everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of oneself and one’s family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care.” The time has come for the U.S. to fully recognize the universality of all human rights, and to join others in implementing a health care system that provide the human right to health care.

Take heed to the voter numbers Senators; they will increase if a public option is not part of the health care bill. If you are concerned about votes or need more votes you would be wise to be an advocate for the American people's right to Universal Health Care or a public option to compete with insurance companies.

  1. If the blue dogs vote against this bill, it will back fire on them. Even though I respect their caution, if they don't vote for the public option, they will be seen as someone who supports big business over the health and welfare of the under dogs—we the people have no chance against big business except for their vote. I'd like them to remember that most of the advertisements against the public option are sponsored by the insurance and pharmaceutical companies, not the American people.
As a long time Democrat and Catholic, I sincerely believe in the values that these institutions represent. These values support the underdog. And regarding health care—many, many people are indeed just that. I would never compromise these values and I would never vote for a Democrat that did. Please remember that Medicare and Social Security are the accomplishment of the Democrats. It only makes since that a uniquely American solution (a public option) would provide the competition and the leverage to balance the outrageous profits that the U.S. pharmaceutical and insurance companies enjoy. With a public option we as Democrats can once again make a difference.
There are many different ways in which we can pay for this and still pay our debts. New taxes don’t scare me but there are many things that we could tax—how about video games, how about raising the taxes on junk food? That might even help the healthcare system save money. For years, my family as well as my extended family, have all been active in the Democrat party—please don’t disappoint us. Lastly—just a reminder:
    Celebrex: 100 mg
    Consumer price (100 tablets): $130.27
Cost of general active ingredients: $0.60
    Percent markup: 21,712%

    Keflex: 250 mg
    Consumer Price (100 tablets): $157.39
Cost of general active ingredients: $1.88
    Percent markup: 8,372%
    Lipitor: 20 mg
    Consumer Price (100 tablets): $272.37
Cost of general active ingredients: $5.80
    Percent markup: 4,696%

And the list goes on, this list came from the research of a Budget Analyst out of federal Washington, DC offices.
    Sincerely,
    Mark and Celeste Gates
