Wanna Be Blue: Message from Michelle Obama

Last week, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced that we're bringing 10 supporters to Washington, DC for several days of Inaugural celebrations.

With the deadline coming up on Thursday, I'm pleased to announce the selection of the first grassroots supporter who will be attending the Inauguration.

Tea baggers have a very selective memory concerning the rhetoric of the Bush administration. This economic crisis is the culmination of wrongheaded right wing fiscal policies. Trickle down does not work. By the way, if “Some think you are wealthy”, you are probably doing all right. Are you really defending the obscene salaries and even more obscene bonuses for CEO’s? LOL! These spending bills are necessary to counter the failed, failed, failed fiscal policies that the Repub’s continue to support. You want people to forget the horrible sadness that we all(even conservatives)felt in Nov & Dec 08 & Jan, Feb & Mar 09 when our hard earned nest eggs melted away, effecting millions. You want us to forget that yours is the party of “swift boaters” that used lies & hate to divide us as a country & a people….Not likely. What we will remember is that the failed right wing notion that deregulation in everything was the answer to all of our woes, also led us here. You are right in saying that there are wealthy Democrats, in fact I know a few of them. The difference between wealthy Democrats & wealthy Repub’s is that the Democrats acknowledge that the same poverty that holds us back as a country is also immoral & needs to be addressed. Conservatives say people are in poverty because they are lazy. I am not saying that everyone should be the same nor have the same. What I am saying is that no one in this country should be hungry, be denied medical care, or be unable to retire in dignity, or have their rights denied for any reason. The wealthy can keep their mansions in the sky, what I am talking about are basic human needs. Our taxes support our military, social security, Medicare, Medicaid and other things that help all Americans succeed. Did you attended a tea party, was it the one in Sherman TX? That’s the one I attended & I have the pictures to verify the T-shirt & sign content. Next time I will bring my tape recorder. C. J.

I witnessed the hissy fit that the hard right GOPer’s threw on April 15th. It was not a pretty sight. This event was organized by the real leaders of the GOP, Rush Limbaugh, Shane Hannity, & Glenn Beck. Not a pretty sight. These divisive “I want Obama to fail” hate mongers are actually the people be effectived when the disastrous Bush tax Cuts expire, not the folks that showed up at the ginned up side show. Most of the protesters will receive a tax cut. Don’t go worrying about the wealthy fat cats folks. They will still be rich & able to make the mortgage, pay the light bill, buy food, send their kids to the best schools, make their car payment & save for retirement, you know, things the working and middle class struggle with daily. All we hear from them is the failed policies of the past 8 years. More tax cuts for the greediest. Trickledown economics does not work, unless you reside in the elite, rarefied tax bracket of Rush, Sean & Glenn. It is also a shame the Herald Democrat did not show the hateful rhetoric of quite a few of the protest signs & T-shirts, but don’t worry I have the pictures to prove it. C. J.

FROM CHRISTINA'S BELLA CUCINA

Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce

Ingredients:
3 cups of stale French bread, cut in ¾ “cubes
2 cups milk
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
4 tablespoons butter, melted & slightly cooled
½ cup white raisins

Preheat oven to 350 Degrees F. Place stale bread in a bowl with milk & squeeze the bread with your hand until well saturated with milk.
With an electric mixer on high speed in a separate bowl, beat eggs with sugar until thick & pale.
Stir in vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, butter & raisins the egg mixture.
Add the soaked bread to the egg mixture and stir well.
Let stand for 10 minutes. It is important to allow enough time for the bread to absorb the egg mixture or the bread will floats to the top during baking, leavening a layer of custard on the bottom of the dish.
Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
Bake until firm or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean, about 45 to 50 minutes. Let it slightly cool. Meanwhile, near the end of the baking time, make the sauce.

Bourbon Sauce:
2 egg yolks
1 stick butter, not margarine
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup bourbon whiskey, to taste

With an electric mixer, beat egg yolks until thick & pale.
In a sauce pan melt the butter & sugar. Pour the butter & sugar mixture over the egg yolks, beating constantly with the mixer until thickened.
Stir in bourbon by hand.
Serve the pudding warm with vanilla ice cream if desired.
Pass the hot bourbon sauce separately.

FROM CHRISTINA'S BELLA CUCINA

Chocolate Éclair Cake

· 1 box graham crackers
· 2 small boxes of instant pudding (vanilla or chocolate)
· 3 cups milk
· 1 small tub of cool whip
· 1 can chocolate frosting
(You can use sugar free and fat free products)

Mix pudding and milk until thickened; fold in cool whip. Place one layer of graham crackers (whole) in bottom of 13” x 9” pan
Pour half of pudding mixture over graham crackers & spread
Place another layer of graham crackers over pudding
Pour remainder of pudding and spread
Place another layer of graham crackers over pudding
Frost with chocolate frosting;
Refrigerate

I heat the frosting in the microwave for about 2o seconds to make it a little runny. Then pour it over the graham cracker. It makes it a little easier to spread without messing things up. This is best if made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
