Stimulus Program Excludes Low-Income Retiree's

Thanks to our Democratic friend Nancy Knapp for informing us of this distrubing part of the economic stimulus package currently being considered by congress. Act now to help those who will be left out. Click below to send letters or call our Senators & Congressman.

IT'S UNFAIR TO EXCLUDE LOW-INCOME RETIREES FROM ECONOMIC STIMULUS REBATES

Many Social Security Participants Could Use Rebate Check To Pay For Living Necessities

U.S. House of Representative leaders have announced an agreement with the Bush Administration for a $150 billion package of tax rebates and business tax cuts intended to stimulate America's economy. It is outrageous that about 20 million of America's poorest retirees living mainly on Social Security will be left out of the rebate equation unless they have at least $3,000 of earned income.

As a retiree--whether or not you will receive a rebate check--you should take action now to convince the President and members of Congress to allow all older Americans to benefit from the economic stimulus legislation. It is critical that you immediately speak out against the exclusion of millions of retirees from the proposed rebates. Edit the NRLN's sample letter on this issue to include personal comments and email it to President Bush and your U.S. Representative and Senators. In addition to sending your letter, call the White House and the Washington, DC or in-state office of your elected representatives to voice your concerns.

National Call-In Day for Horses!

Our friend & neighbor Laura Bass sent this alert to WannaBeBlue. It is posted here to alert all horse owners, horse lovers and members of the Humane Society to help in this most important cause.

Mark your calendars for January 22, 2008, the National Call-In Day for Horses!

The doors on the last remaining U.S.-based horse slaughter plants have been shuttered. Now, Congress must pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the transport to slaughter of American horses to Mexico and Canada. Even when plants were operating within the U.S., several thousand horses were exported to Mexico and Canada annually. Though the total number of American horses killed has dropped, all of them are now enduring terribly long trips over the border that end in a grisly form of slaughter. We have said all along that we must pass federal legislation to stop horse slaughter and the need has never been more urgent.

On January 22, please call your two U.S. senators and U.S. representative and express your support to end horse slaughter permanently.

Senator John Cornyn at (202) 224-2934
Senator Kay Hutchison at (202) 224-5922
Representative Ralph Hall at (202) 225-6673

Please tell your friends and family how they can help end horse slaughter, too. Email and handout the National Call-In Day for Horses flier to everyone you know!
Watch your email on the morning of January 22 for special Call-In Day instructions. Your emails and calls will not only make a difference, they will help make history. Help us end horse slaughter forever.

Thank you for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle

DEMAND PEACE!

Another Christmas gone by. Wow, that was fast. It seems just like a couple of days ago I was signing Christmas cards to send to friends and family. Back in 2007 I had been praying for an end to the illegal war in Iraq. I had been praying that Congress would force the Bush Administration to end the war by refusing to pay for it. So on each card I ended with "Pray for Peace." And today I was thinking that a better approach might be to to have ended with "Demand Peace. " Now I'm not saying that we should stop praying for peace. No, I believe in the power of prayer having benefited from the prayers of friend, family and others that I don't even know. Please continue to pray for one another, for health , for happiness and for peace. But as far your President, Senators & Congressman are concerned don't say you pray for Peace DEMAND it.During the Vietnam war slogans like "War is Not the Answer" & "Give Peace a Chance". were shouted out millions of times before the war finally ended.Shout it! Write it! Sing it! Do it now! Make sure they hear you as often as possible.DEMAND PEACE!
