Rudy on Torture

Recently when asked if water boarding was torture , Mr. Giuliani said: “Well, I’m not sure it is either. It depends on how it’s done. It depends on the circumstances. It depends on who does it. I think the way it’s been defined in the media, it shouldn't be done. The way in which they have described it, particularly in the liberal media. So I would say, if that’s the description of it, then I can agree, that it shouldn't be done. But I have to see what the real description of it is. Because I’ve learned something being in public life as long as I have. And I hate to shock anybody with this, but the newspapers don’t always describe it accurately.”

Here's an idea Rudy. Since your not sure if water boarding is torture and your not sure of the description, why not experience it for yourself? I'm positive that someone would be glad to help show you. Here's a hint to help YOUR HONOR survive this ordeal and be able to decide it is torture or not. DO NOT, under any circumstance, hold your breath!

A Mickey Mouse Operation

Karen Hughes, the undersecretary of state for public diplomacy said she commissioned the work, which Disney shot and produced at no charge and donated, to overcome the pervasive post-Sept. 11 perception abroad that America is hostile to foreigners. She said the video is to be given maximum exposure. "This video clearly says: 'We want you to come to America, you will be most welcome,'" she said. Hughes said "We have already sent the video and associated posters to embassies and consular offices across the world, where it will greet aspiring visitors long before they arrive on our shores. We're going to play it in waiting rooms and at embassy events - and we hope it will inspire many who otherwise might not have thought about traveling to America to come and see it for themselves." The State Department & Homeland Security came up with this idea and the production of the Disney video has the administration's blessing.

Well here they go again. No fact checking. I guess the idea of a welcoming video to tourist is a good idea if it is authentic and well done. The video is well done and except for one thing it is fairly authentic. You see one of the scenes depicting an American site namely Niagara Falls is actually Horse Shoe Falls, the part of the great Niagara that just happens to be in Canada.

Iraq is Bush's Waterloo

"Iraq is George Bush's Waterloo and he is dragging all of us with him into this black hole of spin, deceit, hubris, humiliation and heartache." ~ Allen L Roland. The following are excerpts from Mr. Roland's blog http://blogs.salon.com/0002255/

There is now more evidence that the Pentagon has been low balling its count of the dead and wounded in Iraq ~ which would represent the ultimate spin and deceit of the morally corrupt Cheney/Bush administration. There has always been the strong rumor that the Pentagon only counts those killed in combat in its daily death totals. So if a soldier was wounded and died in transit to a hospital or in that hospital ~ he would not be counted in that daily death or wounded report. Now we have more evidence according to Veterans for Common Sense that the Pentagon is intentionally under reporting casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Excerpt: According to these documents, as of June 30, 2007, US casualties in Afghanistan totaled closer to 7,500 (killed, wounded, injured, and medically evacuated). In Iraq, the total is almost 58,000. Altogether, the report shows that US casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq, between 2001 and June 30, 2007, total 65,278. There is a difference between the Pentagon's publicized casualty reports and reality of almost 34,000.
The Pentagon is intentionally under reporting US casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a recent report by veterans' advocacy group Veterans for Common Sense. The Pentagon's most recent public reports, which can be found in the media, say that 3,587 US troops have been killed and 26,350 have been wounded in Iraq. In Afghanistan, says the Pentagon, 403 US troops have been killed since 2001, and 1,342 have been wounded. Thus, the Pentagon's public accounting gives the impression that there have been less than 32,000 casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. But documents obtained by Veterans for Common Sense through Freedom of Information Act requests reveal the number of casualties to be much higher. According to these documents, as of June 30, 2007, US casualties in Afghanistan totaled closer to 7,500 (killed, wounded, injured, and medically evacuated). In Iraq, the total is almost 58,000. Altogether, the report shows that US casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq, between 2001 and June 30, 2007, total 65,278. There is a difference between the Pentagon's publicized casualty reports and reality of almost 34,000. In the month of June alone, despite a surge ordered by President Bush last January to crack down on the civil war in Iraq, total US casualties mounted to over 1,660 killed, wounded, and medically evacuated. Veterans for Common Sense attribute the discrepancy to the Pentagon's refusal to include medically evacuated troops for injuries and illnesses in its "wounded" reports. The purpose of this new distinction is to lower the numbers in Pentagon casualties reports in order to give the impression that "progress" in the war is being made and that harm to US forces inflicted in the war zone is far lower than reality, states Veterans for Common Sense. These revelations come on the heels of another recent Veterans for Common Sense report indicating that about 180,000 war veterans have filed disability claims with the Department of Veterans' Affairs since 2001.

Alex Horton the Army of Dude

If you missed this, I wanted to share with you an article from the Dallas Morning News about Specialist Alex Horton of Frisco, Texas. read the article here.http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/102207dnmetarmyofdude.36aa198.html

Alex has began a blog chronicling a soldiers transformation in Iraq. www.armyofdude.com. You know what is really going on in Iraq as seen first hand. As any veteran of any war will tell you, nothing you have been told about war or train for can ever full prepare you for what a soldier will face in combat. Experiencing it is the only possible way to know. Telling others about ones experience in war is painful for many soldiers simply because you kind of relive the event when you do. Most vets just don't want to talk about it much less create a blog about the horrific reality of combat. I think Alex has come up with a perfect way to purge his mind of those horrors and at the same time enlighten the reader of his blog to the truth. Many returning soldiers from war do not learn that opening up and sharing their feelings and experiences is cathartic until later in life if ever and after much heartache and many nightmares.

Read his blog and take the time to comment on articles. You will become more enlightened and help a veteran to deal with coming home from combat. Please encourage others to read and support Alex's effort and let us all do more to end the illegal war in Iraq.

Declare Victory and send the troops home. DO IT NOW!!!

SCHIP Veto Hurts Families of Wounded Troops

Overlooked Provisions in Insurance Bill Have Significant Impact on Military Families

NEW YORK – Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation's first and largest nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, today urged Congress to override the President’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) reauthorization. SCHIP includes two little-known provisions which help the families of critically wounded troops. The provisions provide one year of employment discrimination protection to family members caring for severely injured troops, and extends permitted work leave for those family members from three months to six months. Congress passed SCHIP earlier this month, but President Bush vetoed the legislation for reasons unrelated to these military families’ amendments. This Thursday, the House will vote on whether to override the President’s veto.
“Any member of Congress who supports the troops should vote to override the President’s veto. If SCHIP fails, so does this protection for families of our most grievously wounded troops. These service members and their families carry the heaviest burdens of this war and they need all the help they can get,” said Paul Rieckhoff, IAVA Executive Director. “Thanks to improved battlefield medicine, thousands of troops are surviving catastrophic injuries, but they face long and painful recoveries at home. The last thing these wounded heroes should have to worry about is whether the loved one at their bedside is going to lose his or her job.”
One in five severely wounded troops say a family member or friend has been forced to give up a job to care for them. This is true of Annette McLeod, who is featured in the national TV ad campaign IAVA is running this week to demand that Congress and the President improve care for veterans. Mrs. McLeod’s husband, Specialist Wendall McLeod, sustained multiple, life-threatening injuries while serving in Iraq. “When my husband returned home grievously wounded, it ripped my life apart,” said Mrs. McLeod. “I lived in South Carolina, but Wendell was being treated in Washington, DC. After just three months, the human resources department at the factory where I had worked for 20 years said I had exhausted my time off. Being forced to give up my job made a heart-wrenching and difficult time even harder.”
“Already this month, 70 service members have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. A number of them will require long-term care at hospitals which are far from their hometowns. The emotional and financial toll this takes on their loved ones is enormous,” said Rieckhoff. “The time to protect these families is now. This is not a partisan issue; it’s simply a matter of treating the families of wounded troops fairly. We urge lawmakers to vote the right way on this issue.” Two elements of SCHIP impact the families of wounded troops. The first provision, known as the ‘‘Support for Injured Service members Act,” would allow up to six months of leave for family members who serve as primary caregivers of combat-wounded service members. Currently, the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides only up to three months of coverage. The second portion, ‘‘Military Family Job Protection Act,’’ prohibits employment discrimination against these family members by protecting their employment, promotion, and benefits for up to one year. The provisions can be found under Subtitle C, sections 621 and 622. Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is the nation’s first and largest group for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A non-profit and nonpartisan organization, IAVA represents more than 62,000 veteran members and civilian supporters in all 50 states.
